Youngsters given chance of invaluable work experience with apprenticeship scheme (15 Sept 2014)

Eight young people have been offered the opportunity to gain invaluable life and work experience as part of a new pilot apprenticeship scheme.

Seven of the apprentices will be based with finance and business teams across West Yorkshire Police with the eighth completing their apprenticeship within the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The 12 month apprenticeship, which is being delivered by Leeds City College, will gain the young people the equivalent of a Level 3 NVQ in Business and Administration. The eight recruits, who are aged between 16 and 20,  will
begin their positions on Monday, 15 September, starting with a two day induction,  opened by Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins and Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson**.

Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire Mark Burns-Williamson, said: "I initiated a pilot apprentice scheme across the OPCC and West Yorkshire Police in order to give people across West Yorkshire, including our young people, more opportunity to join an apprentice scheme and in this initial phase receive finance and business training and work experience and have a greater chance of future employment.

"I am delighted that we have been able to offer these posts and look forward to meeting all the teenagers that did so well to come this far and welcoming them to West Yorkshire Police and the OPCC."

West Yorkshire Temporary Chief Constable Dee Collins said: "We have now completed the interview and vetting process and look forward to welcoming the eight successful candidates in to their new positions with West Yorkshire
Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire. The number and high standard of applications we received shows that the police are still an employer of choice for many young people and these eight teenagers should be very proud of what they have already achieved in getting on to this apprenticeship programme.

"This apprenticeship scheme offers a pathway for young people in to the police which may not have otherwise been open to them. The finance and administration skills the apprentices will be able to gain by 'learning on the job' as well as the opportunity to work for one of the largest employers in West Yorkshire will provide these young people with invaluable life and work experience to take forward to their future careers.

"The insight that they can provide will also be of huge benefit to the Force and support our ambitions of having a diverse workforce which is representative of the communities that we serve."
