£200,000 for good causes as the Safer Communities Fund opens for applications (30 Nov 2015)

West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Mark Burns-Williamson has opened the latest grant round of the Safer Communities Fund (SCF) with £200,000 available to bid for.

The money for the fund comes directly from money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) and funds local community safety initiatives. Applications for up to £5,000 can now be submitted and will be considered by an Independent Advisory Board.

20151126-_WYP6943This latest round of grants comes less than a week after Mark Burns-Williamson awarded nearly £153,000 in the previous round of the Safer Communities Fund which took the grand total of awards given since the SCF began to over £1milllion.

Hundreds of applications have been received by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner since the fund launched in February 2014 and so far a total of 226 groups have benefited from £1,016,122.

Mr Burns-Williamson said: "I originally launched the Safer Communities Fund to bring together money seized from criminals across West Yorkshire into a single pot to benefit the local communities. There is an incredible demand for funding to pay for community projects which will help people across the county be safer and feel safer.

"I am delighted that we have now reached the £1 million milestone - that means that £1million of criminals' money has been used to help the people of West Yorkshire prevent crime, which sends out a very powerful message.

"I am determined to generate as much money as possible for community safety initiatives and I am leading a campaign to retain all the proceeds of crime in West Yorkshire. Under current legislation, the Government keeps half of the money seized from criminals. This is cash which could potentially double the amount available within the Safer Communities Fund and for policing and criminal justice services.
