Statement on HMIC PEEL Assessment on Legitimacy Report (11 Feb 2016)

West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Mark Burns-Williamson said: "I am pleased that the inspection report by the HMIC recognises overall how West Yorkshire Police (WYP) meets the public's expectation regarding keeping people safe and reducing crime.

"I note that WYP received a good grading across all areas they were inspected on including being fully compliant with the Best Use of Stop and Search scheme and appropriate use of Taser's which is reassuring.

"The report also highlights that officers and staff engage well with the public and accepts that engagement needs to be varied and innovative in reinforcing how neighbourhood policing remains as the bedrock of how our communities are policed, and how important it is that officers remain as accessible as possible to the public in a number of ways, which complements the vision at the heart of the Police and Crime Plan...'Keeping Communities Safe and Feeling Safe'. At a time when our resources have been severely squeezed and challenges faced daily, it is encouraging that WYP have received such a positive endorsement for which I thank and congratulate them."
