West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner welcomes HMIC’s PEEL Effectiveness Report (2 Mar 2017)

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) have rated West Yorkshire Police as "Good" in their Effectiveness inspection for 2016.

Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner said: "Overall this is a very positive report and it is pleasing to see that HMIC have recognised the comprehensive on-going work to safeguard vulnerable people and provide full support to victims of crime which are crucial outcomes in the Police and Crime Plan.

"HMIC also found that West Yorkshire Police are good at tackling serious and organised crime, specifically that they are improving their response to newer threats such as human trafficking, cyber crime and child sexual exploitation.

"HMIC have noted that West Yorkshire Police needs to make improvements in its ability to prevent crime and tackle anti-social behaviour. Work is already on-going in these areas and I will be monitoring progress closely through regular meetings with the Chief Constable and our partners.

"Cuts to our police service have undoubtedly contributed to this, however, the recent recruitment of police officers and protection of Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) will help us to address this concern and I will work closely with West Yorkshire Police to ensure that opportunities are taken to review and develop our neighbourhood policing approach.

"HMIC have now graded West Yorkshire Police as GOOD across all three strands of the PEEL assessment for 2016 (Effectiveness, Efficiency and Legitimacy) which should give confidence to the public of West Yorkshire in their police service.

"This is very positive for West Yorkshire and a testament to the leadership and good progress that has been made during challenging times both in terms of budgets and emerging and complex demands such as cyber crime, human trafficking and safeguarding the vulnerable more generally. I would like to put on record my thanks and recognition for West Yorkshire Police in achieving this independent assessment rating in helping to keep our communities safe and feeling safe."
