Road Safety Week 2020

16th November 2020

Marking Road Safety Week 2020, Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), said:

"It’s Road Safety week which is an opportunity to raise awareness of issues we are facing on our roads, as well as some solutions and support for those adversely affected.

"Road Safety has long been a priority within the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Plan having been raised consistently by communities and highlighted as being of particular importance to them.

"Throughout the week, information will be shared across my website and social media channels, directing people to the latest guidance and advice.

"I will also be supporting the national road safety charity Brake, who I routinely work, as well as the local authorities to highlight the various issues and proactive strategies, such as our joint ‘Vision Zero’ aspiration.

"This approach really underpins the seriousness in which we view the associated issues of road safety awareness and not simply accepting that there will inevitably be victims of road collisions which can be avoided.

"Sadly in addition to the important work of prevention there is a need to support such victims, both those bereaved and those caring for the seriously injured, some of whom have life changing injuries. I want to see a dramatic increase in central government investment in these services working with PCCs and others, through the Department for Transport.

"Technology continues to improve and the increase in use of dash cams has meant that it’s easier than ever to record evidence of dangerous behaviour on our roads.

"We have recently introduced a significant new digital media tool that allows West Yorkshire Police to receive this dash cam footage via a portal on their website. The initiative has already led to positive action being taken against offenders.

"We all have a role in keeping our roads safe and hope that you will join me and get involved in Road Safety week. Thank you."
